Vera Margaret Welch nació en East Ham Londres el 20 de marzo de 1917

Fue "The Forces Sweetheart" de la II Guerra Mundial

alentó con sus canciones a las tropas en el frente

actuaba en la radio, visitaba hospitales y escuelas

hizo giras por Egipto, India y Burma, dando conciertos al aire libre para las tropas

Sus canciones más famosas son: Auf Wiedersehn Sweetheart, If you love me, really love me,
White cliffs of Dover

ostenta el título de Dama concedido por la Reina Isabel de Inglaterra

1990

En el 2005, al cumplirse los 60 años del fin de la II guerra mundial, Vera de 88 años hizo su aparición en el homenaje en Trafalgar Square a los veteranos de guerra, diciendo:

"These boys gave their lives and some came home badly injured and for some families, life would never be the same. We should always remember, we should never forget and we should teach the children to remember"
